AHSCS Round 3

Pre Race: The new location of the Old Crow Harescramble was only an hour away from my house, so I was very excited about that. Saturday afternoon we got in some practice on the brand new virgin trail. The first couple of laps it was pretty sketchy, but it got better. We drove home Saturday night to sleep in our own beds for a change, and I was ready to go.

Race: The start was not the usual wave of a flag and go. It was a shotgun shot and go. I was 2nd on the holeshot behind Spencer Cook from Tennessee. Going into the woods I was soaking wet from the muddy grass track, but still right on Spencer. Half way through the first lap he started to pull away, and I began to get a little nervous. I caught up to him by the end of the lap, and was able to pass him in the grass track. He stayed close behind me for a long time until we came to this tough hill, where a few riders were stuck. I quickly chose a line, and started up, but got tangled with the lapped riders. Spencer was able to make it around while I was stuck. I lost about 30 seconds by the time I finally got going again. I pushed hard and caught up once again. From there on out, Spencer and I swapped the overall lead many times. Going into the last lap, we were neck and neck, and neither one of us wanted to back down. I ended up coming out on top, about 30 seconds ahead of Spencer who got a flat 2 miles from the finish. All in all it was a good race. I did not tear anything up on the bike, nor myself. I will now be getting ready for the Big Buck GNCC in South Carolina on April 11.
