Ironman GNCC

Pre Race: We finally arrived in Crawfordsville, Indiana Saturday afternoon after the 12 hour drive. Unfortunately, we quickly realized it was going to be very dusty. We got signed up, checked out one of the big uphill’s, got the bikes ready, and were ready to race.

Race:  I got a pretty good start, and entered the woods in about 8th place. The first lap was pretty much impossible to see because of the dust, so I played it safe and managed to be in 5th place at the end of lap 1. The second lap was basically a disaster for me. I caught an Open A rider, and went to pass him as he pulled over at the bottom one of the uphill’s. I went inside, and right about then, he cut down and we hit. I lost all momentum, but still tried to make it up the hill, which turned out being a bad decision. I made it about halfway, only to do one of the, flip the bike backwards down the hill maneuvers. By the time I gathered the bike and made it up the hill, I was exhausted. I ended up crashing another time that lap, and came around in 9th place. At the end of lap 3, I pulled into the pits to fill up my new Clockwork KTM tank, get a fresh pair of Smith goggles, and I was off (now in 7th place). The next two laps were average. I rode fast when able to see, and headed into the last lap in 6th only 32 seconds down from 5th. I was determined to catch him, and that’s exactly what I did. We swapped back and forth the rest of the lap. I would pass him, then he would get me back on an alternate line on a hill. As we crossed the finish line, he edged me out by a couple feet. Our transponders read the exact same time, but it was obvious he beat me. All in all, it was an average day. I ended up 6th in 250A, and 45th overall. Special thanks to my dad for making the long trip with me.
