Pre Race: I was invited to make the trip with 17 time Missouri Harescramble champ, Steve Leivan, so I quickly took him up on that offer. Steve, Frank (Steve’s dad), Kole Henslee, and I left around 8 Friday evening. When we got to the track Saturday morning, we unloaded and went to check out the moto track. It was bigger than I expected; I am not much of a motocrosser, so I knew this was going to be my weakness. We decided to ride the fun race Saturday afternoon to get some extra practice and that all went good. At the end of the day, we got to make a couple of laps on the Sunday race track. I really liked it, so I was pumped and ready to go.
Race: There were 19 riders lined up in the Open A class which is a pretty big class. I got an average start and entered the woods in about 6th place. I made a few passes that first lap, and then tried to get comfortable. Kole got a better start than me, so I was pushing to catch him. I finally caught him at the end of the third lap while he was in the pits getting gas. We rode the next two laps together, swapping back and forth quite a bit. On the sixth lap, I started to get tired. Steve Levian caught me at the end of the 6th lap, but I was determined to keep up with him. I kept him in sight until we got to the moto track but lost sight of Steve after that. I went through the check after Lap 6 and had to stop in the pits to get some water because I was cramping pretty bad. I pushed the first couple of miles on the last lap, until the cramps became unbearable. I had to stand up the whole time and shake my arms as much as possible. I ended up 3rd in Open A and 12th overall, which isn’t too bad. Steve won his class and was 9th overall, and Kole finished 4th in Open A and 15th overall. After the race, I got to thinking about it, and realized this was my first 2 hour race to completely finish in a while. I think that had something to do with the fatigue that I didn’t expect. All in all it was a really fun weekend. Thanks to the Leivan’s for taking me, and especially Frank for pitting me.
