Pre Race: The Fort Smith crew headed west Friday afternoon. We finally arrived at the race Saturday afternoon to beautiful weather and a really cool campsite (the local
high school parking lot). We got our bikes jetted and tested and were ready for some good racing!

 

Race: The race started with 4 miles of dirt road to the first test, just enough for me. The
first test was relatively tight single track on very hard packed dirt. I rode
very smooth and finished that one with 15^th overall. The second test
was a little faster with really good flow. I was having a blast through there,
and got a 12^th place finish. The third test was about the same as
the second. My tear-offs got ripped off by one of the very stubborn trees, so
when it started sprinkling the dust was just sticking to my goggles, causing me
to lose vision a little bit. I still rode good and got another 12^th.
Next was the gas. I got filled up, a fresh Silkolene oiled air filter, fresh Smith
goggles, and was back out. The fourth test was the same as the first, and I
rode well. Everyone was saying the fifth test was the tightest so I was looking
forward to that. I pushed hard through there, really using the benefits of the
Rekluse clutch, and felt really good. Going into the last test I had no idea
how I was doing in my class or the overall, but I knew I was having a good day.
The last test was very rocky and technical. I managed to make it through
unscathed and finished the day strong. I ended up with first in my class, and
13^th overall (top amateur)! I was very happy with my day, and really
hope I can keep up these good rides.
